Supporting Refugees
Newton-Brookline Asylum Resettlement Coalition (N-BARC)
In 2017, we formed a powerful multi-faith collaboration with Temple Beth Zion in Brookline, Grace Episcopal Church in Newton Corner, the Newton Centre Minyan, First Baptist Church in Newton Centre and First Unitarian Universalist Society of Newton to support the resettlement of families seeking asylum in the U.S.
We are proud and feel very fortunate and blessed to have supported the immediate and long-term needs of dozens of families seeking asylum over several years. Getting to know these families has been a gift to all our members.
N-BARC provides or helps asylum seekers access to:
- Food
- Clothing and Furniture
- English language instruction
- Daycare
- Education / opportunities for community engagement
- Job training and employment
- Health Care
- School for children
- Permanent housing
- Legal support
We work with clients who already have temporary housing from the time they submit their asylum claim until they obtain work authorization, find employment, and become self-supporting.
You can learn much more at the N-BARC website here.
How Can You Help?
Most importantly, offer time, energy and friendship. Each committee has a chair person and volunteers from among the congregational partners. Please bring your interests and expertise.
Housing
We are always seeking new opportunities for housing. If you can host a family in a single room, in-law apartment, or any other combination of space, please let us know.
Financial Support
Consider making a monetary or in-kind gift to support the families.
Tax-deductible donations can be made in two ways:
- By check: Make your check (especially larger donations) to “The Newton-Brookline Asylum Resettlement Fund Cluster” and send to Temple Reyim, 1860 Washington Street, Newton, MA 02466.
- Online: Secure donations can be made here.
